Acetylene Welding Torch Tips and Advice!

acetylene welding torch

An acetylene welding torch, also known by its full name the Oxyacetylene welding torch is a very important piece of equipment that looks quite basic on the outside, but is in fact a very well designed and advanced part of the welder.

The importance of the welding torch is often overlooked. In light of this we have taken the decision to enlighten you on what the acetylene welding torch is, and how this great piece of equipment actually works.

What is a welding torch?

The welding torch is the flame producing tool a person welding handles found on an acetylene burner. The torch looks very simple, like a metal handle with two knobs and a curved head at the top, but it actually carries out a very important function.

Aesthetically the torch has a long slender metal handle with two knobs and a slim tip coming out the top, which curves to an almost ninety degree angle at the end. The bottom of the handle has two pipes feeding into it.

The torch allows the user to carry out oxyacetylene welding and cutting by varying the amount of gas being produced by the burner.

How does the torch work?

The two hoses that feed into the acetylene welding torch are acetylene and oxygen. These hoses feed into pipes within the torch that run the length of the handle to two knobs known as needle valves. The needle valves regulate the amount of acetylene and oxygen being passed onto the mixing head found on the other side of the valves. The mixing head allows the mixed gases to pass through the slender curved copper tip.

The handle, and tubes housed with, are made from a hard brass, copper-nickel alloy and stainless steel combination that can withstand hot temperatures and protect the gases within their designated tubes. This design ensures the safety of the user.

The valves are controlled by the user and allow the flame to move from a gentle orange flame to a strong and powerful, solid blue flame for use in welding and cutting. This flame allows the user to either melt filler wire into an area that requires welding or to put the flame directly onto a metal surface to cut the metal through melting it.

An Oxyacetylene burner is a multi-functional tool that is effective in both welding and cutting, to ensure its functionality it is important to have a quality and well maintained welding torch.
