Here's how to weld plastic - Welding plastic probably sounds alien to most people but it is an interesting and important type of welding used on a daily basis in the manufacturing industry. While welding is mainly associated with joining metal materials you can also weld certain plastics too.

Welding plastic requires a plastic welder, there are two types of plastic welder, one is a welder very much like a spot welder used in the welding of thin metals and the other is freehand welding know as the hot air welding technique similar to that of the TIG welding process.

Spot welding requires taking your two pieces of plastic you wish to join and putting them between two pincher tips which you then bring together and use the heat generated on the pincher tips to join the plastic. This welding type requires you to understand the heat generated from the welder and the melting point of the plastic so you don't burn the plastic by heating it for too long or cause a poor weld by not applying enough heat.

For those wishing to use a free hand welder, this requires more skill and practice. This hot air welding technique required using a plastic welding heat gun and using the gun to slowly and steadily move the plastic welding gun over the two areas of plastic you wish to weld so they both become soft and can be joined together. The free hand plastic welder works by producing a jet of hot air that softens and gently melts plastic in its path so they can be joined together.

Plastic welding requires a great amount of skill because of the great heat caused by the welders, it is so easy to melt the plastic beyond repairs while using either type of welder.
