Is Pipe Welding The Way To Go?

To be a better welder, do I have to start of by welding pipes? And can you give me tips on how to start off? I've been welding for 2 years now and my down hand position is better than horizontal or vertical. Can you give me tips in this area so I can improve? I always wanted to be a good welder...
