When arc welding you need to wear a full face shield with a miminum #10 lens. The shield protects your skin from the UV and ifrared rays which can seriously burn you skin. Goggles won when cutting should have a miminum # 4 lens. The rays given off by arc welding are extremely powerful and you should weld with all exposed skin covered.
Arc welding gives off 3 types of rays Ultra Violet, Infra red and Visible light rays and also creates ozone gas when the rod is burning, wearing a welding fumes face cover is a good Idea. I am a certified journyman welder and have been welding since 1971 follow the saftey guidelines and you will be much happier fopr it
