Lincoln 180c and Welding Aluminum?

by Dave

Just need some help, I'm a weekend warrior and I have a Lincoln 180c and have some small aluminum parts to weld. Will this machine handle it ? Everything will be less than 1/4 inch. And is the Lincoln spool gun any good or is the Inweld (Coplay) a better spool gun, and has anyone ever installed the switch module on the Lincoln?

Didn't know there was a switch, normal procedure is to switch polarity on the machine itself.

aluminum welding
by: Anonymous

The best spool gun for aluminum welding is the Prince, but it is horrendously expensive.

Other options are second best but a good job can be done with them, depending on the metal thickness and application.

I spent 20 years in the aluminum railing business, and have welded pretty well anything to anything, thicknesswise.

You did not say how long the welds would be, what the application is or how much experience you have had. Tip: tack the pieces together, preheat with a propane torch and your weld will bond better and look better.
