Welding Blankets Guide

Welding blankets are very much like welding curtains.

A welders blanket is uses as a form of safety protection for themselves and for those around them to stop sparks causing fires as burning embers land around them.

As well as safety protection welding blankets are also used for another form of protection, this is to stop surface damage to other areas of the item being worked on. For this reason you can see welding blankets used regularly in the shipbuilding, railway and automotive industries to protect the paintwork and other areas of vehicles while welding is taking place on a specific area.

Typical welding blankets are made from woven fiber glass; this is because glass fiber offers some flexibility while also being heat resistant at extremely high temperatures.

When choosing to purchase a welding blanket it is important to review the size of the blanket to ensure it fits the size requirements of the project you are working on. If it's a large vehicle you may need a larger welding blanket to cover the area for example. Blankets come in sizes ranging from as small as 1000mm by 1000mm to as large as 50 square meters in size.

It is also important when looking to buy a welding blanket that you check what temperature the welding blanket is heat resistant too. Welding blankets are made to protect from 400 degrees centigrade to 1500 degrees centigrade dependent on the thickness and quality of the blanket.

Quality welding blankets are made from special flexible silicate fiber with high strength glass fiber stitching to reduce the possibility of fraying through wear and tear. Quality welding blankets also come with brass eyelets so a welder can join two or more welding blankets together when working on a large project.

All quality welding blankets pass stringent testing and should have a mark to prove they have met safety standard board requirements in the country they were made.
