8 Welding Projects For Beginners!

Here are eight welding projects for beginners. We know that you enjoy and maybe even profit from them!

Welding is a very challenging and technically demanding process but on a more positive note it can also be a very rewarding and stimulating pastime as well. If you are able to hone your skills, who knows? Perhaps you too will be able to join one of the countless other welders who started off as a rank novice and who are routinely relying on their welding to derive a profit from it.

However, that is a topic best reserved for the future, as it is important that the novice hones their skills with welding projects for beginners and gets an intimate working knowledge of the process. There are a number of different welding projects for beginners all of which are guaranteed to help you achieve maximum results and which will also go a very considerable way towards ensuring that you learn the requisite skills to advance. Whilst the output of them may seem petty and even trivial at times, rest assured that they are teaching you a very important lesson indeed and because of this then, welding projects for beginners should never be underestimated at all.

#1: Horseshoe Welding Projects For Beginners.

A common welding project for beginners is horseshoe welding. Again, as noted earlier, it is not the output which is the important aspect of this lesson but rather, the skills and experience which are earned. In order to successfully perform this particular project, the welder will need to ensure that they are able to carefully manipulate the metal at the requisite angle and then proceed to weld them firmly together.

Welding Projects For Beginners #2: Barbecue Grill.

Another firm favorite welding projects for beginners is the creation of a barbeque grill. First off you will need to ensure that you actually measure the angle iron, bearing in mind that for safety as well as comfort, you will need to position the barbecue above the waist of the user.

The best way to bisect the angle iron is to make use of a jig saw which will cut through the metal fairly easily and with minimal resistance. Please remember: some of the parts will need to be cut at a 45 degree angle, and you may find it easier to cut and shape the metal in this way rather than trying to bend them to the 45 degree mark manually.

When creating your very own barbecue, please make sure that you include a flip hatch within the barbecue so that you can then remove the ash deposits that will build up over time much more easily and safely. Leaving these deposits as they are without any attempt to remove them is not only unsanitary it also means that you are placing whoever happens to use the barbecue in a considerable amount of danger.

Welding projects for beginners can be fun for advanced welders too! But one of the frustrating parts of being a novice welder is finding great projects and ideas that can further develop your welding skills and keep you engaged by giving something interesting to create. It's good to practice a weld on pieces of scrap metal, but being able to build something tangible that you can use is a different matter altogether.

To help those who are fairly new to welding we have compiled a number of welding projects for beginners and some ideas you can use to create your own items and build your welding skills further. The below welding projects for beginners are detailed from small welding projects up to large welding projects so you have the choice to pick which ones suit your needs.

Welding Projects For Beginners #3: The Digger.

Using simple metal items you can create some amazing artistic items to put on display in your home, one of these could be a model digger. To create a digger with tracks use small piping and cut into equal pieces the cut two strips of metal and bend into the shape of the tracks, you can now weld the cut pipe on to the inside of the tracks for the tracks rollers.

After this you cut, bend and weld thin gauge steel to make the body of the digger. To make the arms simply use bent pipe or bolts with the head cut off. For the rear of the digger you can use a thick screw for the end as a drill. For the front you can cut and bend a piece of metal then weld on sides for the scoop.

Tools and materials required:

  • Welder
  • Screws
  • Bolts
  • Steel sheet
  • Cutter
  • Steel pipe

Welding Projects For Beginners Project #4: Bracelet.

One for the wife or partner, why not make that special someone a bracelet for a special occasion. The beauty of this project is that not only are you getting your partner a piece of jewelery, it will be bespoke and made by your fair hands so she will like it simply for its sentimental value.

To make a bracelet you need to cut thin strips of piping and weld them together. Once this is done you can make small items to hang off your bracelet then weld small washers off the bracelet and put your items on the end. This will give a homemade bracelet in the style of the expensive Pandora bracelets.

Tools and materials required:

  • Pipe
  • Washers
  • Steel sheet
  • Welder
  • Cutter

Welding Projects For Beginners #5: Metal Bowl.

Now you might have a workshop and find you're always losing little bits and bobs, well why not create your very own metal bowl to store these small pieces?

To create your metal bowl take your steel sheet and cut into a large circle. Now place your circle in the English wheel and apply even pressure as you keep wheeling the metal to and fro through the wheel making it bend into a bowl shape.

Now you have worked on the bowl take your pipe and cut two pieces to the same length. Take these two lengths of pipe and mark 5 cm from the end on both ends on each, you now need to place these in the pipe bender and bend both ends to 90 degrees on each piece of pipe.

You will have two handles now that can be welded on to the sides of your bowl to give extra leverage for carrying if its heavy with small metal items.

Tools and materials required:

  • English wheel
  • Steel sheet metal (14 gauge size)
  • Steel pipe
  • Welder
  • Pipe bender

Welding Projects For Beginners #6: T-Bar Motorcycle Handlebars.

Ever wanted to make your own motorcycle handlebars? Then why don't you!

There's nothing better than welding projects for beginners that are fun, fast, and easy. And this is one of them! If you get good at it you can even make a profit from your work, and move into other areas of motorcycle welding and fabrication. You will need a length of thick steel or aluminum piping, your choice dependent on your experience of Mig or Tig welding. Now you need to measure and cut one long piece of piping to the length of the bars you want, giving an extra couple of centimeters to allow for the bends you will make in the bar.

Now you need to measure where you will make the two slight bends in the bar either side of the center. To make the bends work out how much of an angle you want, then get your manual pipe bender. To use the manual pipe bender, place the pipe in the bender and gently clamp it down. Now put the former in behind the pipe and pull the arm to the required point so your pipe bends to the angle you want, and then repeat on the other side.

To create the T section of your bar cut two pieces of pipe to the same length and then weld these to the front of the center of your handle bars some five to ten centimeters apart. You will now have your own T bar handlebars.

Tools and materials required:

  • Welder
  • Aluminium or Steel piping
  • Cutter
  • Pipe bender

Welding Projects For Beginners #7: Mountain Bike Frame.

This is one of my favorite welding projects for beginners. This can be used for Mig or Tig welding dependent on your experience with either. For this you need to make your own mountain bike jig before creating the bike itself, this will help ensure you get the accuracy of the frame so it can be used.

To build the jig get a current mountain bike frame and put it against a fairly thick gauge of sheet metal, now mark out correctly the angles and measurements of the bike on the metal with a chalk. Now you can use box section or angle iron in small sizes to weld to the sheet metal in relevant areas so you can put your piping being used for the frame on this home made jig.

Now you need to cut your different sizes of piping into the lengths you require, after this you can put these on your home made jig and weld them together.

Tools and materials required:

  • Angle iron or Box section
  • Welder
  • Aluminium or Steel piping
  • Steel sheet
  • Cutter
  • Chalk

#8 Welding Projects For Beginners: Coffee Table.

Ever wanted to have an original coffee table, one that people will admire and you can call your own...then why not build your own. They can be very useful and artistic welding projects for beginners.

To build your own coffee table take two lengths of angle iron. Cut one of the lengths into four pieces of 650 mm in length, cut the second into 2 pieces at 600mm in length and 2 of 1000 mm in length.

Now take the pieces of 600 mm and 1000 mm in length and cut the inside edge of each to a 45 degree angle. You can now weld these together with the 1000 mm as the length pieces and the 600mm as the width. When welding, do so on the inside to leave a clean look on top. Use an angle grinder or file to clean the welds on the inside once the welding is complete.

Take the four 650mm pieces and place on the inside of each corner and weld one at a time ensuring that when you stand the table up at the end it does so without rocking so the legs are even. After this you simply paint the table. You are probably wondering where the top is, for this you buy some small padded feet from a hardware store that you apply to each corner and a piece of glass from a glass wholesaler to finish your very own coffee table.

Tools and materials required:

  • Welder
  • Angle iron
  • Cutter
  • Angle grinder or file
  • Paint

I hope you found these welding projects for beginners helpful in your quest to improve your skill while welding something worthwhile.
