6g Pipe Test 6" Pipe Carbon

Hello. I am trying to finish up a 6” 6g pipe test gig the root and hot pass cap it with a 70/18, 1/8th. But my cap looks like crap my left side looks ok, but my right side is killing me. They let me grind it back off, so Monday I have to put the cap on it and hope for the best.

I am getting undercut on my stringers. One welder came by and said it as my hard side and I was not holding my angle on the rod right. This is my nd pipe test.

I have been welding nothing but Tig for the last 4 years so I am way out of touch with the 70/18 18th rod. Please give me some good advice on how to pass this test. I really need to go to work for Christmas. Thank you in advance.

All the previous comments are good and correct 1/8 7018 IS NOT the right size for 6 inch pipe unless its heavy wall, 3/32 would be better but don't argue with the weld inspector if he won't let you use it. Sounds like your having more problems with your bad side because you don't have any thing comfortable to lean on. Find a pipe wrench and hang it in the end of the pipe and rest your arm on that. Also the 1/8 is going to require more control and this can be done by making your stringers run level in other words the puddle will run like a water line like being level with the horizon. Even though they pipe is on a 45 your puddle will run level.

Your getting undercut that means your to hot, angle is incorrect, or maybe there is still mill scale on pipe that needs cleaned better. Or it could be that 1/8 inch is to big for you try using 3/32 and always get comfortable before you weld. Another possibility is the pipe as a whole is too hot , letting things cool down alittle helps sometimes.

I would suggest that you should lower your amps. With 1/8 7018 rods you should be 80-110 amps. Try around 85-90 amps and keep your rod at a 90 degree angle to your work piece.

Before you start your welder put a rod in the stinger and go thru the motion of completeing you cap. Notice the tip of the rod as you go thru the motion. Find a position you are comfortable with and breath- do not hold your breath and keep in mind as your rod gets shorter your position will change.
